Watonga Public Library has a long and rich history. The library was started in 1906 through the efforts of Mrs. T. B. Ferguson, wife of Oklahoma's 6th Territorial Governor, and a small group of concerned women. By 1930, the library had grown enough to move to the basement of the City Hall. The current library building was constructed in 1931 for use as a school. The library moved to this location in 1961 and the building was remodeled in 1973, adding space to a growing collection. The current building is 3,366 square feet, housing a collection of over 32,000 items.
In April of 2003, the library received a construction grant through Oklahoma Department of Libraries. The grant is in the amount of $70,875. The City of Watonga will provide a 50/50 match amount plus some in-kind contribution. The proposed facility will add 1475 square feet includes a meeting room, ADA compliant bathroom facilities, and an entry area. The addition of a dedicated program space will allow the library to expand programming in the community.
