A Donald J. Ross Design

Donald Ross was born November 23rd, 1872 in Dornoch, Scottland, and served an apprenticeship with Old Tom Morris at St. Andrews before investing his life savings in a trip to move to the United States in 1899. Ross was appointed as the Head Golf Professional at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina in 1900 where he began his career in Golf Course Design. he had a successful playing career, winning three North and South Opens (1903, 1905 & 1906) and two Massachusetts Opens (1905 & 1911) as well as finishing fifth in the U.S Open in 1903 and eighth in the Open Championship in 1910.

Donald J Ross designed courses with very little earth moving and was known for his crowned or “Turtleback” green trademark. His designs invited players to make run-up shots but had severe trouble at the back of the greens in ways such as fall-away slopes into collection areas. Ross designed roughly 400 courses in the United States.

Ross was a founding member and first president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, which was formed at Pinehurst in 1947. Donald Ross passed away April 26th, 1948 and was admitted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977. His legacy still lives on.
