The Fort Hunter Free Library

History:

The Fort Hunter Free Library was founded June 23, 1927 and was located in The Community Hall on West Church Street. The library moved to the old Ft. Hunter School where it remained for several years until it once again moved to the current location in September 1984. The Fort Hunter Engine and Hose Co., Inc. and the library are housed in the same building at 351 Main Street. The fire department built the new firehouse in 1984 with additional space allowing room for the library. The Fort Hunter Library is noted for its local history books on the Mohawk Valley and Erie Canal.

In our area there are two local historical societies set up to preserve the history and future of area waterways: Friends of the Schoharie, and the Fort Hunter Canal Society. For further information on these societies please contact the library.

We also have The Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site in Fort Hunter that has pictures, models, and restored buildings of the life on the local waterways. During the summer months horse drawn wagon rides are a feature on weekends. Each July the Erie Canal Festival takes place and many local groups participate including the library with its annual book sale.
