About Us
It is often said "you really step back in time." This is
literally true when you visit the Shook Museum. This historic house was built in two different periods of our history -- circa 1800, and later a large addition/remodeling in the 1890s. The house is protected by a historic covenant held by Preservation North Carolina.
Since it contains very little furniture, the House is not like other museum homes. Instead, it is a museum which features early American pioneer construction and architecture. The earlier portion of the structure was built in what was then wilderness -- our American frontier. You see the materials and method of construction used by a pioneer settler who pushed westward soon after the American Revolution. You also see the later rustic Victorian construction.
The recent rescue/restoration included installation of a catering kitchen. The facility is available for rent for small affairs, parties, receptions, etc. The first and second floors of the house are handicapped accessible.
