Red Bud Public Library

History Of The Library:

Evidence of a library association active in 1875 and ending in 1901 has been found. It was sponsored by the independent Order of Minor Americans. At least 115 books were ready for circulation.

Sometime before 1912, a local lady decided that the residents of Red Bud, and the children in particular, needed access to a library. The first order of books was for $25.00 Members of the Red Bud Library Association took turns loaning books each Saturday evening. The library was located in several different buildings until it finally found a semi-permanent home in the City Hall.

The Red Bud Public Library was organized as a tax-supported organization when the first board was approved by the City Council on July 7, 1946. The move prompted the donation of a new furnace by the American Furnace Company. The library continued in what was then the city clerk’s office until the early 70s when the Red Bud Fire Company built a new firehouse. The library moved into the present council chamber until the old firehouse attached to the City Hall was renovated and an addition built to the south.

The library moved into its current location in August of 2003.
