The library in Cass City began as a project of the Women's Study Club in 1910. In 1966 it was reorganized as a district library and named the Cass City and Elkland Township Library. At that time it was located in a small 20'x30' back room of what is now part of the New Sheridan Health Mart.
A new and much needed 2900 square foot facility was constructed in 1970 with the assistance of the Audley Rawson family in honor of Mr. Rawson's wife, Lena. At that time it was renamed the Rawson Memorial Library.
In 1978, a 1500 square foot meeting room and storage area were added. With the addition of the meeting room, the library became a community center as well as a traditional library. Use of the library and participation in library programs has exceeded all expectations. The townships of Elmwood and Novesta became a part of the library district in 1990. Evergreen, Greenleaf, Grant and Ellington townships contract with the library for service. The total population served is 8,178 persons in seven townships.
