Putnam County Library services began with a bookmobile in January of 1961. The Hurricane Branch opened on Second Street soon afterwards.
The system has grown to the main library in (1975) Located in Teays Valley. Branch libraries were established in Eleanor in 1978 and replaced with a new permanent location on Main Street in Eleanor in (2007). A small branch in Buffalo was built in (1984) and is in the process of replacement in the near future. The small library on Second Street in Hurricane was replaced with a larger facility on Midland Trail in (1989) and Poca replaced their branch with a log structure on Main Street in Poca in (2001).
The main library is located on Route 34 near the Teays Valley exit of Interstate 64. Putnam County is experiencing population growth. It is estimated to exceed 58,000 by 2012. The library system is heavily utilized for informational and recreational reading materials, curriculum support, Internet access, meeting rooms, and community programs for adults and children. The branch libraries are located within their respective communities and often supplement their local school libraries in providing resources to students and citizens of their communities. Each library in the system has a strong summer reading program with over 1,000 children registered and participating in a variety of programs.
