About the North Amherst Library

Founded by the North Amherst Library Association on March 17, 1869, the library was originally "kept" at the post office. At that time, the librarian was also the postmaster. As of October 1883, the library moved to the schoolhouse. There it continued to flourish and had its own published catalog with a collection of 1,125 volumes. The present library building was constructed in 1893 and became the first free public library building in Amherst. Thanks to a generous donation from Mr. William Holland, the Library was renovated in 1996-1997 and continues to serve the North Amherst community and its neighbors. The North Amherst Library is a branch of the Jones Library, Inc.

At North Amherst Library, we have approximately 18,000 items available for loan or library use. The collection includes books, compact discs, cassettes, videos, DVDs, books on tape and compact disc, magazines, computer games, and reference materials, for both adults and children. The library provides Internet access and computer access to the online library catalog. Personal attention is always available for help in locating materials and information.
