Mission Statement:

Kanab City Library enriches the lives of its citizens by fostering lifelong learning by providing access to information, materials and services that address the educational, cultural and recreational needs of the community.

Kanab City Library serves the community of Kanab in the beautiful red rock country of southern Utah. In addition the library serves Kane County and the adjoining Arizona Strip. It is located 7 miles from the Arizona border and 80 miles east of St. George.

The original library was built in September, 1915 as a result of the efforts of nationally known educator Mary E. Downy and the Ladies Literacy League who strongly lobbied the town council for a library. It was little more than a room with a few tables, chairs and books in the Jepson building but it sufficed until a new library was built of red brick in 1939 to meet the needs of an expanding population. On September 2, 1992, a 5.9 earthquake damaged the structure causing the library to be closed. After many fund raisers and a state grant, the new current library opened in February, 1999.
