Johnston Lakes Library

720 Lakes Boulevard
229-559-8016

A Brief History:

Opened March 4, 1990, the Edith Garlow Johnston Lakes Library was dedicated and named for Edith Garlow Johnston, an active library supporter and wife of Country Johnston, the Lake Park developer who donated the property for the building. Set among majestic, moss draped oaks in beautiful Lake Park, the library is located directly across from the Lake Park U.S. Post Office and adjacent to a Lowndes County park. Francis Lake is right across the street.

Grace Clay was the first manager of this library, the third installment in a five libraries building campaign, funded in part by a Georgia grant program. Clay was succeeded by Dorothea Sutphin, Janice Daugharty, Geneva Taylor, Essie Parker, Beth Zeigler, Maggie Castor, and Karen Black.

Presently serving as library manager is Lisa Brower - named to the post in 2005. Brower hopes to continue this library’s mission of reaching out to the Hispanic community through the further development of a book and movie collection. “The library is the perfect welcoming place to begin a relationship with the community,” Brower says.
