Herington Public Library

In the year 1897, 10 years after Herington, Kansas was founded, the Women's Mutual Benefit Club was organized. Their first project was to make a library. When the Women's Mutual Benefit Club was organized, they had little or no money, so to build a library they had to raise money by doing various things.

In the year 1904, the women finally raised enough money so that they could start dealing with real estate aspects of the project. This is when they formed the Library Association. The women bought the lot, at which the present day public library is, for a total sum of $700. Finally, in 1910, the library organization began, and later in the year 1916, the present day library was built thanks to a man named Andrew Carnegie, who came from Scotland.

The former librarians at the Herington Public Library were: Mrs. Crary (1910-1924), Mrs. Ethyl Ragland (1924-1930), Mrs. Ida Stover (1930-1945), Mrs. C.H. VanDeventer (1945-1948), Marion Young (1948-1969), Mrs. Stuart (1969-1993), Frances Vogel, and Donna McCullough. The present day librarian is Susan Carlson. All of these people contributed time and effort to the town of Herington today. People of Herington are very thankful to them.

Throughout the years people have continued to make the library a safe and happy place for people to read and study. People of Herington, Kansas are proud to have the library they have today.
