About as:
The Friends of the Fairhope Public Library (FFPL) is an outgrowth of a loosely organized group of volunteers that formed in 1959 to provide needed library services. The members disbanded after several years, and the current group was founded in 1971 with formal by-laws, tax exempt, non-profit status, and membership dues.
FFPL, comprising approximately 400 members, provides financial and volunteer support to the Fairhope Public Library and encourages use of library facilities. It supports or underwrites a number of programs: the Tuesday Morning Book Review/Lecture Series; The Written Word Book Discussion Group; Consanguinity, a summer movie program; the children's Summer Reading Program; and Raise A Reader, a community outreach project that encourages reading and use of the library by parents. In addition, donations are made to the library for funding unbudgeted books and equipment. These donations are drawn from the Friends' Bookstore and book sale profits, fundraisers, and membership dues, which are renewable yearly.
The Friends' Board of Directors for 2007 is as follows:
President-Brenda Huchingson
Vice President-Mary Gregg
Treasurer-Frieda Ward
Secretary-Mary Lucas
Members at Large-Barbara Bayer, Julie Ford, Susan Hamilton, Rose Mary Heveran, Marilyn Holder, Roberta Long, and Fran Morley
FFPL welcomes the financial and volunteer commitment of all library supporters.
