About Franklin Road Branch Library

As early as 1943, a group had formed a reading club and later petitioned the Indianapolis Public Library for materials to begin a staffed-by-volunteers library in an empty church building in Acton.  In November, 1966, planning began for a permanent branch library.

The Wanamaker Branch located at 8822 Southeastern Avenue opened for business on April 14, 1969. The Wanamaker Branch was one of the library system's smallest branches, with less than 3,000 square feet of public space, and it held about 23,000 books and magazines.

On February 6, 2000, to meet the growing needs of the patrons in the area, the new Franklin Road branch opened to the public, replacing the Wanamaker branch. The Franklin Road Branch reflects the flavor of its farm background in design, and provides over 18,000 square feet of space for a solid selection of books, magazines, and audio-visual materials.
