Frackville Free Public Library

The Frackville Free Public Library first opened its doors to the public on November 13, 1939. It was located on the 2nd floor of the Polanchyck building at 44 S. Lehigh Avenue where it remained until 1972 when it moved to the 1st floor of Walter Baran's building situate at 56 N. Lehigh Avenue. Mr. Baran had used the building as a factory and outlet. In 1975 the Library purchased the building from Mr. Baran, having conducted a fund raising project to cover part of the costs of the purchase. A mortgage covered the remaining costs.

On January 29, 1985 a mortgage burning ceremony was held in the Library witnessed by a large group of citizens and patrons, celebrating the fact that the mortgage had been paid in full.

The Library installed its first computer, a Tandy, in 1986 with a Grant obtained through Schuylkill Intermediate I.U 29. A new furnace was installed in 1991. The Reference and Science collection was updated in 1992 and handicapped facilities constructed in 1993. Bell Atlantic of Pennsylvania installed a new IBM computer with Internet capabilities in 1995. In that year the North Schuylkill School District placed at the library a deposit collection of textbooks called the Homework Library, which books students may use if they forget their textbooks at school.
