Coldwater Public Library

About Us:

The Coldwater Public Library began June 17, 1936. Mayor Arnold Schoch and several interested citizens felt a library was needed to meet the educational and recreational reading needs of the citizens of Coldwater. It was decided the library would be a municipal library and the name would be Coldwater Public Library. The library began very modestly in one room on the second floor of the present city hall building. Private citizens and businesses donated many of the books.

The library continued to grow, necessitating several expansions and relocations. In April 1961, the library moved to its present location at 305 W. Main St., which also houses the Coldwater village offices. In 1997, Coldwater Public Library moved into its latest expansion, doubling the original floor plan. In 1998 the Coldwater Public Library became fully automated thanks to the help of many wonderful volunteers, working tirelessly to barcode the library's 50,000 items.

Many of the library's improvements can be directly attributed to the generosity of the Community Picnic. Local organizations and several private citizens developed the concept of a community picnic at Memorial Park. The proceeds were to be divided between the park and the library. Since the first picnic in 1961, the Community Picnic continues to be the highlight of the summer and has provided both the library and the park with much needed equipment and resources.
