Brownfield Public Library

History :

Brownfield Public Library was established by “The Ladies of Center Village” in 1897, with a mission to “maintain a public library in the Town of Brownfield and to work for the interest of literary culture among the people of the town.” Until recently, the library consisted of a 16’ X 36’, one room building, which replaced the original building that was destroyed in “the great forest fire” of 1947. In 1949-50 a group of Quakers rebuilt what is now the front half of the library. Trustees and residents built the back half in the 1960’s.

The building was relocated on June 13, 2004 to a new lot closer to the center of Brownfield Village (between the Fire House and the Village Green), and construction began on an addition. After more than a year of work, the building was ready for a Grand Opening set for August 13th, 2005.
