Bon Air Branch Library

Recently renovated, the Bon Air Branch is the second-largest facility in the library system, holding over 100,000 volumes. Bon Air offers many important services, and boasts such amenities as an outdoor reading area and a public meeting room.

History

The Bon Air Branch opened in 1965 on land presented by the Bon Air Estates. It was LFPL's first new library building since the 1940's. The construction was made possible by the passage of an occupational tax.  In 1992 - 1993, the building was renovated and doubled in size to 20,000 square feet. The Bon Air branch now contains around 100,000 items, many which were purchased by funds from a challenge grant provided by Alderman Barbara Gregg and the local community. In 1995, Alderman Gregg added a garden and outdoor reading area on the east side of the building. Besides reading benches, the garden contains two Barney Bright statues that were donated by the Meadow Heights Women's Club in 1965. The Bon Air branch is one of the largest and busiest branches in the city. It has a 200 person occupancy meeting room that is open to the public, and can be subdivided into two rooms. Materials available for check-out include adult and juvenile books, books on tape, videos and large print books. Services include computers with learning games for children, electronic databases, and Internet access. The branch offers story times for children as well as programs for adults.
